Sailing in Bermuda
June 1999 to June 2002 I started
sailing almost immediately after coming to Bermuda. I had never sailed before,
but I caught on rather quickly. Before the end of that first year, some friends
and I purchased a 24' sailboat that we raced every Saturday and Wednesday
evenings for most of the year. We did not always do very well...but we had a
great time.

We had team shirts and hats made with a logo that I
designed...'Centipede' was the name of our boat. |

Once every
year, usually in June is what they called the 'bilge boys' race where someone
else on the crew takes the helm. The job was mine for 2 years. The first year
it was blowing hard 20knot winds, but with a lot of help from the rest of the
crew we did pretty well. In three races we placed 8th, 3rd, and 4th
out of
9 boats. I was pretty happy with that since it was my first time helming. It
was a great learning experience.

My position was usually winch man. |
